On International Women's Day

Brandon Yulolo

On March 8, 1917, women in Soviet Russia gained suffrage for the first time, which led to March 8 being celebrated as a national holiday. This day was then celebrated and adopted by multiple movements, such as the socialist and feminist movements until 1977. The United Nations recognized the date, thus, March 8 was officially declared as the International Women’s Day (IWD).

IWD is a global holiday that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Advocates, usually by mobilizing, call to advance gender equality and the welfare of women. To commemorate IWD, Bicolana Gabriela, along with other progressive organizations in Bicol, protested to call for the advancement of women's rights, social amelioration, vaccination, and consumerism issues.
